The Comox Valley Community Foundation and our generous donors recognize the importance of supporting tomorrow’s leaders and assisting students in realizing their educational goals by providing support through a variety of scholarship and bursary funds.
CVCF works in partnership with School District No. 71 (Comox Valley Schools) and North Island College to administer our scholarship and bursary program. If you are a student graduating high school, you will find available awards listed in your school’s Awards Booklet. Students attending North Island College will find information on applicable CVCF awards in NIC’s Awards Catalogue. Talk to your high school guidance counsellor or NIC’s student services team to learn more, including how to apply.
Listing of CVCF Scholarships and Bursaries
Generally, scholarships recognize academic achievement, while bursaries are awarded based on financial need.
Mary Catherine Aitken and Elizabeth Cherry Aitken Scholarships and Bursaries
Administered through North Island College for both entering and continuing students attending NIC on a full time basis. Both scholarships and bursaries are available.
Beecher Developments Bursary
Administered through School District No. 71, two bursaries are offered to deserving students whose ordinary residence is the Comox Valley: one for a student pursuing an academic program and the other for a student pursuing a vocational (trades) program, both at the post-secondary level. The awards rotate between the four high schools.
Ben Bellamy Memorial Scholarship
Administered through School District No. 71, this scholarship is awarded to a deserving student whose ordinary residence is in the Comox Valley and who is graduating from Highland School. Grade 12 applicants must show high academic results, respect for others and a kind, caring personality. The award is paid out over 4 years of post-secondary study.
Harold Rodney Christie Scholarships
Administered through North Island College, four scholarships are available: one for a student entering the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and one in each of year 2, 3 and 4 for students continuing in theBSN program.
Dr. Robert E. Clarke Bursary
Two awards are available for School District No. 71 students graduating from grade 12 and wishing to pursue a career in the Health Sciences at the post-secondary level. One award is available to a 3rd year Bachelor of Science in Nursing student at North Island College. These award are paid out over 2 years of post-secondary study.
A fourth award is available to a student from the Comox Valley who is entering the provincial medical program through the University of British Columbia.
George T. Cochrane Scholarship
Administered through School District No. 71, this scholarship supports a deserving student graduating from Georges P. Vanier Secondary School who is enrolling in post-secondary studies in the field of Education.
Courtenay Volunteer Fire Department Bursary
Administered through CVCF, this bursary supports dependent children of regular members of the CVFD moving on to post-secondary education, pursuing any trades, technical or academic program.
Bud Colbow Scholarship
Administered through School District No. 71, this scholarship supports students whose ordinary residence is in the Comox Valley and who are pursuing studies in Agriculture or Forestry at the post-secondary level.
Geoff Longland Memorial Bursary
Administered through School District No. 71, this bursary is offered to deserving graduate of Georges P. Vanier Secondary School whose ordinary residence is in the Comox Valley and who is pursuing post-secondary studies in the field of Engineering at the University of British Columbia.
Arthur & Phyllis Ramsell Bursary
Administered through School District No. 71, this bursary is available to students pursuing a career in the field of Nursing or general Health Care.
Gary Rolston Agrifood Bursary
Administered through School District No. 71, this bursary supports a student pursuing training in agrifood or beverage-based programs at the post-secondary level.
Jeff Stewart Memorial Fine Arts Bursary
Administered through School District No. 71, this bursary supports a student graduating from School District No. 71, who is pursuing performing or fine arts education at a public, post-secondary institution. Within their applications, applicants should demonstrate the qualities of community-mindedness, creativity, determination, innovative thinking, and a passion/“Spark” for the fine arts, all of which Jeff Stewart embodied.
Deux Langues Deux Mondes Bursary
This bursary is available to support the post-secondary journey of a French Immersion student at School District No. 71, who resides in the Comox Valley. Among eligible applicants, preference will be given to those pursuing a pathway to becoming a French Immersion teacher. The Deux Langues Deux Mondes Bursary Fund, held at the Comox Valley Community Foundation (CVCF), was generously established by Ms. Verena Bryner, who pioneered the Comox Valley’s first-ever French Immersion program. For all graduates, she shares that second-language learning is “a wonderful gift you have given yourself that will open so many doors, not just in the teaching profession, but in countless unexpected ways throughout your lifetime.” The successful candidate’s college, university, or school of choice must be either a registered charity or qualified donee with the Canada Revenue Agency.
Dolores Woodie Bursary
Administered through School District No. 71, this bursary is to support students in the Comox Valley pursue post-secondary education at a public university or college of their choice.
Rick Jackson Scholarship – Foundation Trades
Through Rick’s extraordinary gift of one million dollars to the Comox Valley Community Foundation, the Rick Jackson Fund will provide scholarships for students in the Comox Valley for generations to come. This scholarship will be awarded to students graduating from School District 71 who are pursuing Trades training from Foundation to Red Seal certification at any Post-Secondary Institution in Canada and will be distributed over five years. Consideration will be given to those with high grades. Other donor-designated preferences set out in the application will be taken into consideration in choosing a recipient.
Rick Jackson Scholarship – University Studies
Through Rick’s extraordinary gift of one million dollars to the Comox Valley Community Foundation, the Rick Jackson Fund will provide scholarships for students in the Comox Valley for generations to come. This scholarship will be awarded to students graduating from School District 71 with high achieving grades who are pursuing University Studies at any Post-Secondary Institution off Vancouver Island (within Canada). Consideration will be given to those who must leave Vancouver Island to attend post-secondary and who have a clearly articulated career path. Other donor-designated preferences set out in the application will be taken into consideration in choosing a recipient.
Ryan West Legacy Bursary – Comox Valley United Soccer Club
This bursary was created by Ryan’s family and friends, to honour his memory and legacy by supporting a graduating student who is pursuing post-secondary studies and has been an active participant in the Comox Valley United Soccer Club and who is moving on to pursue post-secondary studies. The deserving student also shares Ryan’s passion for all aspects of the sport and values the friendships fostered from competition. Preference will be given to those with high year-over-year participation in the soccer club both as a player and in other areas of club involvement such as officiating, mentoring, coaching, or other volunteer duties. The area of study is open.
Ryan West Legacy Bursary – École Au-Cœur-De-L’île
This bursary was created by Ryan’s family and friends, to honour his memory and legacy by supporting a graduating student from École Au-Cœur-De-L’île who is pursuing post-secondary studies. Like Ryan, the deserving student has been enrolled from Kindergarten through Grade 12 at École Au-Cœur-De-L’île, and shares Ryan’s passions for life, people, and his desire to live life to its fullest. All students are eligible. Preference will be given to those enrolled from Kindergarten to Grade 12. From those, candidates pursuing further education in Forestry, Environmental Sciences, or other Science-related fields will have preference.
Stew Savard Robotics/STEAM Leadership Award
Thanks to the incredible generosity of Stew Savard, a former Navigate NIDES teacher with a passion for bringing robotics Comox Valley youth for many years, this leadership award is offered to inspire and encourage SD No. 71 high school graduates who are pursuing studies in STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, aesthetics, mathematics), with an interest in robotics, at any public post-secondary institution in Canada. Consideration will be given to applicants’ leadership involvement in extra-curricular and community programs as demonstrated through the application’s leadership survey.

Claiming your award
You will receive a letter confirming your award and describing the process you must follow to claim your award, including providing CVCF with proof of registration. It may take several weeks to process your award, so please provide the information required at least one month before tuition fees are due.
