Community enrichment awards celebrate another record

This year the Comox Valley Community Foundation will award $316,300 to local charities and students. The majority of the grants will be awarded during the Foundation’s annual Community Enrichment Awards on Thursday, January 19.

This year 21 local charities will receive $114,900. In addition, for Canada’s 150th anniversary, and in partnership with Community Foundations of Canada, the CVCF will also distribute $15,000 towards five registered charities’ projects that:

  • encourage participation in community activities and events to mark Canada’s 150th,
  • inspire a deeper understanding about the people, places and events that shape our community and our country, and
  • build vibrant and healthy communities.

“We are always so pleased to be able to make these grants,” said Foundation President, Dr. Norman Carruthers. “We feel privileged to be able to assist the many groups and individuals who are working tirelessly to improve our community.”

This year the CVCF will make its first substantial grants from the Catherine Mary and Elizabeth Cherry Aitken Fund. From this legacy gift, the Comox Valley Healthcare Foundation and the Comox Valley Hospice Society will be receiving major contributions to support their mission. Also, this legacy includes 15 new $2,500 scholarships for local students at North Island College, bringing the total amount of scholarships funded through the CVCF in 2017 to $61,400.

The CV Community Foundation also administers a number of endowment funds for local organizations whose total awards amounted to more than $115,000. Later this year the Foundation will issue $10,000 in professional development grants to support the professional development of board, staff and volunteers within the local charitable sector.

“It’s inspiring to hear first hand from the recipients how the CVCF funds impact each organization and our community as a whole,” said Carruthers. The event, held at the Comox Community Centre, is free to attend. Those interested in attending can contact Antonia Mahon at cvcfadmin@shaw.ca for more information.

Currently the Comox Valley Community Foundation has assets totalling $11.5 million. All assets are invested in perpetuity to provide an on-going source of funding for local initiatives. The total amount returned to the community since the inception of the Foundation now exceeds $2 million.
